Ice Skating Rinks

The City of Hopkins has six parks with supervised ice rinks and warming houses. Skating rinks with warming houses are available for your enjoyment at eight Minnetonka and six Hopkins park locations.

Outdoor skating rink opening delayed due to lack of frost in ground

Due to temperatures that have resulted in little to no frost in the ground, flooding of outdoor ice rinks scheduled to start in mid-December has been delayed until further notice. Lack of frost in the ground causes several issues for outdoor skating rink flooding:

  • Unpaved surfaces don’t hold water due to the lack of frost – the water simply seeps into the ground instead of staying on the surface.
  • The water truck needed to flood the rinks can’t travel on the grass to access to the rinks without creating ruts and damage to parks that would later need to be repaired.

We understand residents are eager to get outside and enjoy outdoor ice skating this season. As soon as the weather cooperates and creates conditions conducive to outdoor rink flooding, Hopkins staff will work around the clock to build up ice and create the rinks.
