Building Permits

A building permit is required for work that is regulated by the building code. This includes:

  • Any work done to the permanent weather resistive surfaces of the dwelling such as the siding, windows, or roof
  • A change in the use of a space or the finishing of unfinished space, such as your basement
  • The building of additions, garages, and decks
  • New construction

Who Can Apply for the Permit?

For residential building projects:

  • The owner of an existing single-family dwelling that is homesteaded and occupied by the owner, or
  • A contractor with a State Residential License (must have a hard copy on file with the City

For commercial building projects:

Supporting Documents

All remodeling projects, decks, additions, garages, and new homes require the submission of electronic detailed building plans. These plans must include: 

  • Site Plan: A detailed, accurate drawing that shows the property lines and the location of the proposed structure(s) on the property.
  • Dimensional Details: All relevant measurements, including the dimensions of the proposed structure(s).

Please ensure that your submission is complete to avoid delays in the approval process.

How Much Will the Permit Cost?

Email Inspections Admin with the project valuation for an estimation value. 

How Do I Schedule an Inspection?

The contractor must schedule the inspection. Email the Inspections Admin, call 952-548-6320 (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or use the online request form. Schedule your inspection at least 24 hours in advance. 

When calling for an inspection, you will be asked to provide the address, permit number and type of inspection you are requesting. Inspections are done between 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m., and are scheduled every half hour.
