Garden

The City of Hopkins provides a community garden site area in Valley Park in the Westbrooke/Nine Mile Creek area where residents can lease a 20-foot by 20-foot garden plot. There are a limited number of accessible raised planter beds at the community garden.

Apply

Starting March 1, interested gardeners will be able to enter a lottery for a community garden plot online or in-person at Hopkins Public Works. The lottery will be open through April 1, with names drawn the first week of April and notified via email or mail. If all plots are not claimed by April 27, those on the waitlist will notified. 

Residents who are chosen to receive a plot must provide proof of residency in person at registration at Hopkins Public Works, 11100 Excelsior Boulevard.

Registration Dates

  • Resident registration
    • April 11, 2026: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    • April 13-17, 2026: 8 a.m. to noon
  • Non-resident registration
    • April 18, 2026: 9 a.m. to noon
    • April 20-24, 2026: 8 a.m. to noon

If all plots are not claimed by April 27, those on the waitlist will notified. 

Proof of Residency

Accepted documents for proof of residency:

  • Minnesota Driver’s License
  • Minnesota ID Card
  • United States Passport
  • Tribal ID Card
  • Utility bill with photo ID
    • Telephone, TV or internet
    • Solid waste, sewer, electric, gas or water
    • Banking or credit card
    • Rent or mortgage
  • Residential lease or rent agreement within 30 days of registration date with a photo ID.

Household Limit

Due to the high demand for plots, there is a limit of one plot per household. 

Price

The rate is $25 per plot for Hopkins residents and $35 for non-residents. 

When to Plant

Public Works will till the gardens prior to planting and stake the plots. Plots are ready to plant in mid-May. 

Gardeners must clean out their plots by October 15.
