[ARCHIVED] Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Calls for Water Conservation Efforts

Due to prolonged drought conditions throughout the state, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has called for reduced water consumption.

Though the City of Hopkins' groundwater supply is not in jeopardy, the daily water pumping rate is very high and the continued drought conditions have led to increased groundwater drawdown at the City's three wells. The DNR, in accordance with the Statewide Drought Plan, has asked public water suppliers to reduce their water demand through local implementation of water conservation measures.

Accordingly, the City of Hopkins is asking its residents to voluntarily reduce their water consumption by considering the following actions:

1. Reduce or delay non-essential water uses, such as:

  • Car washing
  • Pool filling
  • Pressure washer cleaning

2. Practice common water conservation measures:

  • Use dishwashers with full loads only
  • Consider taking a shower instead of a bath
  • Don’t continuously run water while brushing teeth or shaving

Additionally, be sure to follow the year-round City of Hopkins irrigation watering restrictions:

  • No watering between the hours of 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Odd/even day watering restrictions (odd addresses water on odd days only, even addresses water on even days only)

During this drought, the City will be more actively monitoring and enforcing the above irrigation watering restrictions.

The City will also reduce the hours of the Burnes Park splash pad to noon to 7 p.m., effective Monday, August 2.

We are hopeful that August brings an above average rainfall and an end to the drought. However, if the dry conditions continue, the City may have to take more stringent water conservation actions to reduce daily water demand.

Questions may be directed to Hopkins Public Works at 952-939-1382.
